TEACHING GODLINESS

We studied Titus 2:1-8 Sunday morning in our lesson. I mentioned that I thought it was the guideline for how to teach the younger generation.  These are the ideal Òyouth ministers.Ó  Paul addressed the older men (aged men KJV) as to how they should conduct their lives and what they should teach to others.  One of the words that are found numerous times in this section of scripture is the word Òsober.Ó One of the words used comes from a word, which means to be Òcalm and collected in spirit.Ó  This one is used in Titus 2:2.  The other two occasions, verses four and six are from a word, which means Òof a sound mind, sane, in one's senses; curbing one's desires and impulses, self-controlled, temperate.Ó  I described it as taking responsibility, growing up, acting like a husband/wife or a mother/father.  You need to grow beyond the lighthearted and irresponsible attitude that is sometimes characteristic of young people.

The primary emphasis is on the older women (aged women KJV).  Those instructions are found in Titus 2:3-5. ÒThe aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.Ó Teaching needs to take place by word and by example.  Example plays a major role in the instruction found in this section of scripture.  They can observe from the life of older Christians, how they need to conduct themselves, how they need to treat their husbands, how to deal with their children.  These are things that God considers good things.  The world has the opposite view of this, but we should always have the attitude that I want to please God, and by doing these Ògood things,Ó I am doing just that.  When we do these things, our lives will Òadorn the doctrine of GodÓ (Titus 2:10).  It is so important that we be the right example before others, especially the younger generation.  They need to see Christ living in us.

SIN IS MANÕS GREATEST PROBLEM: SALVATION IS MANÕS GREATEST NEED

Our study will deal with the topic of sin and salvation. In a real sense the Bible is about sin. An objector might say, ÒBut I thought the Bible is about salvation.Ó  It is, but salvation from what? We are back to square one, sin. He might continue, ÒI thought the Bible is about a Saviour.Ó  It is, but a Saviour from what? Again we are back to square one, sin. As a problem, sin is on the front burner from Genesis 3 onward. Only two chapters treat man in a state of innocencyÑGen. 1-2.  George Gaylord Simpson wrote in The Meaning Of Evolution that man has risen, not fallen. Genesis 3 refutes the well-know evolutionist.

                        The Comprehensive Nature of Sin

1.  What sin did to Satan and fallen angels. Satan is not eternal, hence he is a created being. He was not created as the kingpin if iniquity. As a creature of free moral agency, he chose sin over continued loyalty to his Maker. Paul alludes to the prideful condemnation into which he fell in 1 Timothy 3:6. As per 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6, certain angels sinned, kept to their first estate, left their own habitation and were cast down to Tartarus reserved for eternal punishment. Sinful Satan touches woman and man by serpentine agency in the excellencies of Eden (Gen. 3:1ff).

2.  What sin did in Eden.  Eve was tempted by the lust of the eye (forbidden fruit was pleasant to view), the lust of the flesh (forbidden fruit was good for food) and the pride and vainglory of life (would make her wise as God). She stretched forth the hand of transgression, plucked the fruit, ate and gave it to Adam who plunged into sin as she had just done. They were stripped of innocency. They were filled with shame. They sought means to cover their nakedness. Sin separated them from God. They became excuse makers. They laid the blame on others. ÒLook what you made me do.Ó They died spiritually; they were expelled from Eden. Separated from the tree of life, they would die and so would all of their descendants. Enoch and Elijah alone of the past have escaped natureÕs final debt. Sin was costly to Adam and Eve.

3.  What sin did to Cain.  He was earthÕs firstborn. He sinned in worship to God. He offered what eh desired, not what God demanded. His was will worship (Cf. Col. 2:23). He was a modernist in that he despised a blood-linked sacrifice. Modernism has always been an avowed enemy of a blood-oriented religion. He refused correction from his offended Maker. He slew Abel. He then lied about where Abel was and denied any responsibility for being a brotherÕs keeper, protector and shield. He fathered a race of rebels and a people of profanity.

4.  What sin did to NoahÕs peers.  Sons of God (righteous people, not angels)) married the daughters of men (wicked women) and the progeny was anything but desirable. A righteous manor woman married to a wicked mate is totally incompatible. It is like mixing light and darkness, good and evil, righteousness and unrighteousness. There is no fellowship or communion. The descendants produced became universally wicked with the exception of NoahÕs family. Their sins and violence brought on the Noahic flood in Genesis 6-7. Peter affirmed that the flood came on the world of the ungodly (2 Peter 2:5).

5.  What sin did to Sodom and Gomorrah.  At the very time Lot pitched his tent toward this sinful city the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedinglyÓ (Gen. 13:13). By Genesis 18-19 they had become such a stench in the nostrils of holy Jehovah that justice called for their fiery destruction. Not even ten righteous people could be found in the corrupt confines of Sodom. Homosexuality abounded in this city! They even sought homosexual relations with the angelic duet in LotÕs home (Gen. 19:5). They were fornicators and went after strange flesh as per Jude 7. Fire and brimstone were rained upon them. They have suffered in Hades since and are bound for eternal Gehenna subsequent to final judgment. Sin has a sure payday for Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim (Deut. 29:23).

DonÕt Join Any!

All up and down this troubled land confusion reigns today;

As honest folks on every hand in doubt are heard to say;

ÒI cannot tell which church to join,
there are so very many.Ó

To whom we offer this advice-you never should join any!

You cannot join the church of Christ,
no man can vote you in,

The Lord Himself will add you,
when He saves you from your sin.

Then take no chances, neighbor;
this race but once youÕll run.

A church youÕd join would be of man,
and not the proper one.

Beware a church you cannot find within the sacred pages;

Be safe, dear sinner,
rest your soul upon the Rock of Ages.

Be added to His blood-bought church,
and drink salvationÕs cup.

For every plant God planted not, it shall be rooted up.

No mournerÕs bench on Pentecost,
the inspired Peter fitted,

But said, ÒRepent and be baptized,
that your sins may be remitted.Ó

The Lord, who saved and added those who did, that day, His will;

Will do the same for you, dear friend,
for He is adding still.

Let not false teachers lead you wrong,
nor close your eyes in slumber;

When Jesus said HeÕd build His church,
ÔTwas not in plural number!

No choice of churches, neighbor mine,
is found beneath the sun,

Though men may have ten thousand,
our Savior had but one.
