GROWTH

Sunday saw several people using their talents and abilities in service to the Lord.  Brian Harville did a wonderful job leading singing Sunday morning.  Some people just have that ability.  All the young men who participated in the services Sunday evening did a wonderful job as well.  Tim and Jimmy did a great job with their lessons.  A comment was made to me concerning how well Addison did with scripture reading Sunday morning and evening.  These young people (and not so young) are to be commended for their willingness to participate.  Their parents are also to be commended for the teaching and training that they have put forth with these young people.  Thank you again for encouraging these young men to do what they do.

We have a busy schedule the next two months.  The church picnic will be this Saturday at the barn.  We will begin around 10:30 AM.  Please sign up to tell us what you will be bringing and also come to enjoy a period of fellowship together.

Our Gospel Meeting will begin on June 21st.  Make sure your calendar is clear for that week.  Bro. Gary Hampton who is the Director of the East Tennessee School of Preaching and Mission will be preaching and Bro. Wally Kirby will be leading singing each service.  Gary preached at Jefferson Ave. in Cookeville before taking the position of director of ETSPM. I am looking forward to hearing the lesson that he will present.  Bro. Charles White was scheduled for our meeting this year, but schedule conflict caused a last minute change.  I am grateful that Gary was willing to come on short notice.

Our Vacation Bible School will be July 6-10th.  The theme this year will be ÒFishing With The Master.Ó  We will try to get the material ordered in the next few days to make sure the teachers have adequate time to prepare their lessons.  We need to be inviting children and adults to come and study with us.

One thing I almost forgot.  Tim Smith will be with us Sunday evening to give a report on the India work.  He always does a good job keeping us informed about the work that we are helping with.

Endangered Species: The Biblical Family

Approximately twenty years ago, a sociological experiment was initiated that had a single objective: to alter our concept of the ÒtraditionalÓ human family.

To achieve this objective, curriculum was introduced to school children that began redefining the human family as just any group of people that ÒloveÓ each other and who live together.

The object of this exercise was not intended to foster feelings of acceptance for non-traditional

familiesÑfamilies that may have suffered the loss of a father or who may have adopted an orphan

from distant lands. The real objective was to distort the definition of a family and to erode moral

resistance to immoral Òfamily unitsÓ.

Now, we see the effects of these experiments. In our society, a family is no longer redominantly or ideally recognized as the biblical model portraysÑone man, one woman, for life. Rather a family can be virtually any group of people functioning together in society.

Secular humanists are now working hard to erase any semblance of the biblical model from

public consciousness. Case in point: Sarah Palin was nominated as the Republican Vice- Presidential candidate. She was instantly praised for her family values. But her political enemies

wasted no time pointing out obvious failures in her immediate household.

Andrew J. Cherlin, professor of Sociology and Public Policy at Johns Hopkins University, gleefully seized the opportunity to proclaim an end to the traditional human family:  What is important today, in other words, is not who you live withÑand how youÕre legally bound to themÑbut rather how you feel about them.  He then concludes: If the trend toward embracing greater diversity continues, however, convention stages a generation from now could easily look quite different from this yearÕs. We could all be watching as a gay or lesbian candidate shouts out to his or her ÒrockÓ or ÒinspirationÓ: a same-sex partner, smiling from the VIP box.

Welcome to our post-modern world. Forget the Bible, forget the whole of human social history, forget past legal precedents, what matters nowÑ more than anything elseÑis how you feel about your family.

Cherlin and his cohorts are working hard to ensure you do not ever see a happy, successful biblical familyÑever. In his world, it doesnÕt exist. Which explains why they are working so hard to make sure you see all the flaws, which may be present in any ÒtraditionalÓ family.

And note this: Cherlin is planning to break all traditional boundsÑwithin one generation. And he has plenty of help as elected officials dance on the end of a string for powerful social lobbyists.

There is an important lesson to learn here: Satan is patient. HeÕll accept the results next week, but is just as content to wait for the payoff to come in the next generation. If you pay close attention, he is telling you his plans. Paul says it like this, Òwe are not ignorant of his devicesÓ (2 Cor. 2:11). Or at least, we shouldnÕt be.

The problem is that far too many Christians silently, passively accept one tiny compromise after another. Then, when a Òreally importantÓ issue comes to the surface, we kick and scream Òfamily valuesÓ.

One preacher recently sent out an email crying and bemoaning the homosexual agenda at work in the current election cycle. Meanwhile, he is in his third marriage (i.e. due to his adultery). Is it any wonder the world is finding our arguments for biblical families less than convincing?

Changes are coming. Yes, even to a small town near you. Are you ready?

You should be taking every opportunity to teach your children and grandchildren the biblical family model. More importantly, you should be living it. May God help us all to be conformed to His image and reject the worldÕs.      Jared Jackson, The ForestHill News, 11/04/08
