It is time for school to begin again. Does not seem possible, but it starts in our area this week. Some of you are excited and some of you are not looking forward to having to get up in the morning and/or the classroom work you will have to do as well as homework. One of the things that always concern Christian parents is the environment our children are going into for seven to eight hours per day. We need to be concerned about morality and school. I do not know what the newest fashion trend is, but parents and young people need to remember GodÕs word need to govern what we wear and do not wear. One of the primary concerns that Christian parents have when their children go to public schools is the material that is found in the textbooks. Children receive a steady dose of secular material from textbooks that is in conflict with the word of God. I read this statement in Think magazine. ÒAdd to this we have a priority problemÑhow many times have parents skipped Bible study on Wednesday night because of all the secular homework a child brought home (or sports activities)? (Have you ever heard of a student staying home from school because they did not have their Bible class work finished?) Do we ever really consider the eternal cost?Ó [Think, Vol. 5, Issue 8, Aug 2010, Focus Press, Inc. 2010]. It seems that it is very easy to get our priorities mixed up when it comes to school and the activities involved. By our actions we are saying they are more important than spiritual things. I would disagree with that conclusion.
We have done a great job in filling up the container for a Òtrial runÓ of bringing supplies for students at Defeated Elementary School. Hopefully we will do as well in filling up more containers with school supplies.
One other point I wanted to make. It was good to have James and Beverly Meadows with us Sunday. Bro. Meadows presented a plaque to the congregation for our support of the school and for our extra help in purchasing some 4,000 books from a personal library to help the school. James did a great job with preaching and teaching class (even though he did not realize he was to do either).
ÒAnd to the angel of the
church in Sardis write, ÔThese things says He who has the seven Spirits of God
and the seven stars: I know your works, that you have a name that you are
alive, but you are deadÕÓ (Revelation 3:1).
IT IS DIFFICULT FOR GOOD
PEOPLE TO SEE THAT THEY NEED TO SEEK GOD BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF THEIR
COMFORTABLE LIFESTYLE. The church in Sardis, for example, was made up of people
who saw themselves as respectably good. And others also saw them as
praiseworthy. We ourselves would probably have seen them as such, if weÕd had
the chance to know them. And yet, their hearts were not as close to God as they
supposed. Because of the ÒsatisfactoryÓ nature of their religious practice, it
was not easy for them to see how far they still had to go in seeking God.
The story of Job
illustrates what needs to happen to many of us whoÕve lived our whole lives in
religious respectability. Job was a good man. Even God commended the devoutness
and devotion with which he lived (Job 1:8; 2:3). There was nothing wrong with
JobÕs approach to God, as far as it went. The problem was that it didnÕt go as
far as it needed to. Job himself would probably have had difficulty, as a good
man, seeing the gaps in his relationship to God. It was only after an
unexpected storm of tragedy blew down his house of cards that Job could see how
far heÕd previously been from where he needed to be: ÒI have heard of You by
the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and
repent in dust and ashesÓ (Job 42:5,6). This statement is striking because it
is not the penitent cry of a reformed ÒsinnerÓ Ñ it comes from a man who had
never been anything but Ògood.Ó
Do we come from a devoutly
religious tradition? That is a good thing for which we should be grateful; its
advantages are obvious. Have we managed to acquire personal habits that are
respectable? That also is to be commended, certainly. But let us not be
deceived. That which passes for ÒreligionÓ can delude us into thinking that
weÕre closer to God than we are. It may even be that we are dead, though we
have a reputation for being alive. It happened at Sardis; it can happen to us.
And like Job, we may need to be broken by sorrow before God becomes real to us.
ÒThis is the hazard. Our eyes are blinded by self-love. We do good things and then become proud . . . Outright sinners can be reformed with less difficulty than those who hide under a cloak of false virtueÓ (Lawrence Scupoli).
