I have often been warned to never trust someone who says, Òtrust me.Ó This is especially true if it is a salesman of some sort. We have been looking at cars for one of our children over the past few weeks. Fortunately we have not had one of the salesmen to say that, probably because I have learned who to try to deal with. Trust is something you have to earn. One defined it as a firm belief in the honesty, reliability, etc. of some person or thing. You want to deal with people you can trust by their actions, not just by what they might say to you. You have to have confidence in the individual or the thing you are trusting.
When our Lord tells us to trust in him, you can do that with assurance. We looked at Proverbs 3:5,6 in the sermon Sunday. ÒTrust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.Ó The Bible has a great deal to say concerning our trust in God. Job stated in Job 13:15, ÒThough he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.Ó ÒTrust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. . .Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to passÓ (Psalms 37:3,5). ÒThou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strengthÓ (Isaiah 26:3, 4).
Solomon tells us the danger of trusting in our own heart. ÒHe that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.Ó Proverbs 28:26, KJV. When I trust the Lord with all my heart, that means that I will have no reservations, no second thoughts about doing what he desires me to do. I will take God at his word. That is the kind of faith and trust and confidence we need to have in Him.
In God We Trust is on our money; it is also the motto for our country. The question is, is he the God we trust in our lives and in our hearts. That is what is important both now and for eternity.
